Looking for great wines at great prices?

It’s always nice to get more bang for your buck – and sip on something delicious while you’re at it. Wine is a category where price does not determine quality, and in fact, is perhaps the greatest wine myth. Here are some great value tips to help you find the best bottles at a great price.

Tip #1 – Look for Unique Regions

When you’re perusing the wine store, look for lesser-known regions like South Africa, France’s Languedoc region, Austria or even Portugal and Spain to find great quality wines for lower than expected prices.

Tip #2 – Show Off With Ontario Sparkling

Most of the Sparkling wine produced in Ontario is made just like Champagne, but for a quarter of the price. The bottles taste superb, are a great way to support our local economy and offer exceptional value. Sparkling wine isn’t just for a celebratory evening – it also pairs well with cheese, and is the perfect start when you’re at a restaurant for dinner (many establishments offer VQA Sparkling).

Tip #3 – Shop South America

Bottles from Chile and Argentina are definitely wallet-friendly and have great sipping quality, simply because everything is less expensive in those areas. Try Carmenere or Cabernet Sauvignon that taste great, at great prices too.

Tip #4 – Viva Italiano

The Italians have always been about value. Amarone might be a bit too much to buy all the time, but try a Primitivo (Zinfandel), Ripasso style wine, or Chianti for lower cost and exceptional taste.

Tip #5 – Find Your Style and Get Adventurous

Sip outside of your comfort zone. If you like Sauvignon Blanc, try Gruner Veltliner. If you appreciate Moscato, sip on Gewurztraminer. If you’re a fan of Pinot Noir, try Gamay. If you love Riesling, take a chance on Pinot Gris. If you like Cabernet, try Carmenere. Get grape curious in your wine style, and you just might find new wines for lower prices that are hidden gems.
