A Global Grape
Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape variety in the world. There is an abundance of regional options to try – from Canada to California, France and Italy, Australia and New Zealand, to Chile and Argentina.
Most sparkling wine that is produced in the traditional method uses a combination of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes – so without it, we wouldn’t have amazing bubbles. When a sparkling wine is made with 100% Chardonnay grapes it can be called “Blanc de Blanc,” translating to white of white.
Lean and Easy
Chardonnay can be light and crisp when it is unoaked or very lightly oaked. This makes it ideal for easy sipping. It is also a great addition in white wine blends. When tasting lighter-bodied Chardonnay, you will find citrus, pear and apple flavours, typically balanced with great acidity.
Full and Bold
When Chardonnay is aged in oak barrels, it gives the wine texture and body characteristics that can be described as buttery or creamy. Typically these wines are higher in alcohol and fuller-bodied. When they age, they begin to take on notes of butterscotch, toffee, and nuts such as almonds.
Chardonnay a La Francais
When you’re in the French section and the bottle doesn’t have “Chardonnay” on the label look for white wines from Beaujolais, Chablis, Maconnais, Mersault, Montrachet, Pouilly Fusse, and Burgundy, which are also made from the Chardonnay grape and taste great.
Winemakers all over the world love working with Chardonnay. It is a versatile and well-known grape that above all taste magical. It is revered at dinner tables around the world, since it is ideal for food pairing and comes in several forms, including sparkling, sweet, and table wine. So start sipping and find your perfect Chardonnay!
