Focusing on the launch of Zenato Alanera Rosso Veronese in the LCBO, we welcomed Winemaker Alberto Zenato into the iYellow Wine Cave earlier this month. I had the chance to ask him a few questions during the evening and he told me a bit more about his family’s deep history in winemaking.

His father, Sergio was a pioneer in the Italian wine community and was very involved with promoting the wines of the Lugana region. The winery’s original production was centered around the native varietal Trebbiano di Lugana. This deep rooted history in the origin of a community is something that Alberto takes very seriously, and that Zenato prides itself on. Producing and promoting wines that are distinctive of the Lugana and Valpolicella regions. This reflection in winemaking has created a Zenato legacy of wines that have character.

In the spirit of this character, I decided to taste the wines and provide an official storyline tasting note based solely in emoji characters! Because we have to have some fun here at iYellow, right!

Veneto Rosso Paraziale Appassimento ($13.45)

This wine is your basic Italian wine at an affordable price point. When you’re in the Italian wine section and you don’t want to break the bank, or your budget – pick this one. But let’s be real, it also means you can buy a couple of bottles, and we like the sound of that!

Emoji Score:   = some red fruit notes, this wine will get the basic betty emoji waiving her hands in the air, and it pairs perfectly with pizza!

Alanera Rosso Veronese ($22.95)

This wine will be released in LCBO VINTAGES on June 25th and is a blend of 90% traditional/native grapes, and 10% Merlot. The name translates as ‘black wing’ an homage to the raven which translates to ‘corvo’ in Italian and this is a reference to the native Corvina grapes, of which this wine blend is crafted on. This wine is my new go-to Italian wine, look for it in the LCBO, ASAP!

Emoji Score:  =This is one cool wine, with a little more rustic flavours going on to it, pair this with some pasta for a sure fire Italian experience!

Valpolicella Superiore Ripassa ($26.95)

Only the best from Valpolicella gets re-blended in recently vacated vessels of Amarone. This wine is a Ripassa style (think passes over) meaning that the grapes are literally passed through the wine soaked skins and lees (dead yeast cells) that have been left behind from the recently vacated Amarone vessels.

Emoji Score: = Lip-smakingly good, this wine has a little bit of spice and everything nice. It pairs just as well with chocolate as it does with some meat off the bone!

Amarone Classico ($52.95)

The icon of Italy, this Amarone doesn’t let you down.  It is a blend of all traditional varietals at about: 80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, 5% Croatina, 5% Oseleta and it’s 100% delicious!

Emoji Score:  = big bold and beautiful, this wine has muscle and some secondary earthy notes to it. Pair this bad boy with some aged Pecorino for a party in your mouth!

Chatting more with Alberto, we talk about some of his favourite wines. The Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato is one wine that has a special place in his heart. Originally introduced by his father, this is a wine that is only produced to perfection through excellent grapes and terrific vineyard management through each specific vintage. It is where the distinction of Zenato meets the significance of Lugana.

So, whether you’re looking for Italian on a budget or big, bold and classic, Zenato has something for you! Look for Zenato wines in the Italian section of your favourite LCBO store!
